Theaterisation Focused Top Military Meet to Be Joined by PM Modi

On Thursday, a peak military conference was started in Bhopal. It will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st April. It will be focused on India's renewed push for theaterisation for utilising its military resources in the best way possible in order to fight future wars.

It will include the operational readiness of the armed forces in the backdrop of a prolonged border row with China and the progress to accomplish self-reliance in the sector regarding defence manufacturing, as stated by officials who are familiar with the matter.

The Combined Commanders Conference, which is a three-day event, is themed on Ready, Resurgent and Relevant.

"During the conference, deliberations will be held over a varied spectrum of issues pertaining to national security, including jointness and theaterisation in the armed forces". "Preparation of the armed forces and progress in defence ecosystem towards attaining 'Atmanirbharta' (self reliance) will also be reviewed", as revealed by the PMO.

The domestic sector's share regarding the defence budget has never been higher. In 2022-23, 68% of the capital acquired by the military has been set aside by India for making local purchases, 64% in the 2021-22 financial year and 58% in the 2020-21 financial year.

Besides creating a separate budget for purchasing military hardware made by locals, a series of steps have been taken by the government in order to promote self-reliance in the sector of defence manufacturing. It includes the increase of foreign direct investment (FDI) from 49% to 74% and notifying several weapons and systems that can't be imported.
